Areas to consider when expanding your Stem Cell Research Investment Opportunities

In the stem cell research area it is important that you have the right staff and the right backing in the region you are moving into. North East England has one of the highest concentrations of stem cells researchers in the UK. 

The resources all ready located in the North East of England is already huge including North East England Stem Cell Institute, a joint venture between Newcastle University, Durham University and NHS (National Health Service), aims to be one of the top 10 stem cell research centres in the world.

Life Knowledge Park, meanwhile, based at Newcastle’s International Centre for Life, is concentrating on research into degenerative diseases associated with ageing.

The Centre of Excellence for Life Sciences (CELS) is driving the life science and healthcare economy by identifying and exploiting market opportunities with commercial potential.

A team from the North East were the first in the world to isolate a new type of stem cell from adult mouse testes and turn them into heart, muscle, brain and other cells. Among those now involved in the research effort is one of the top international cell scientists, Professor Karim Nayernia, who has been attracted to North East England for its stem cell expertise. 

Stem cells have the potential to develop into any tissue type in the body and could therefore be used to develop a wide range of medical therapies. Here are five reasons why you should invest in stem cell research in the North East;

1.Newcastle Human Embryonic Stem Cell Group are one of only two research units, and the first in the UK, to be awarded a Human Fertilisation & Embryology Authority licence to undertake somaticcell nuclear transfer.

2. North East England is the only centre in the world which has successfully carried out a nuclear transfer procedure in human embryos; and the only centre in the UK which combines scientific Expertise in embryonic and somatic stem cells with clinical excellence in transplants, cord blood and bone marrow research. Six human Embryonic Stem (ES) cell lines have been established in Newcastle in the last two years.

3. North East England is home to one of only two NHS Cord Blood Banks in the UK at the Stem Cell Cryopreservation and Manipulation Unit in Newcastle.

4.The North-East England Stem Cell Institute (NESCI) has made significant investments to meet its ambition to become one of the world’s top ten stem cell research centres.

5. Durham University has created a £6m integrated research centre of Bioactive Chemistry; which is linked to the £6m Integrative Cell Biology laboratories. The Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine is an interdisciplinary research centre and collaborates with the NHS and the James Cook Hospital in Teesside.
