North East England is the only centre in the world which has successfully carried out a nuclear transfer procedure in human embryos; and the only centre in the UK which combines scientific Expertise in embryonic and somatic stem cells with clinical excellence in transplants 3. North East England is home to one of only two NHS Cord Blood Banks in the UK at the Stem Cell Cryopreservation and Manipulation Unit in Newcastle. 4.The North-East England Stem Cell Institute (NESCI) has made significant investments to meet its ambition to become one of the world’s top ten stem cell research centres. 5. Durham University has created a £6m integrated research centre of Bioactive Chemistry; which is linked to the £6m Integrative Cell Biology laboratories. The Centre for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine is an interdisciplinary research centre and collaborates with the NHS and the James Cook Hospital in Teesside.
