Air Intake- An Insight View

Air Intake as the name suggests is an intake of air for the engine. The function of air intake is to provide great efficiency and power and thus it should be tuned and engineered in a way to serve this purpose.

Ideally an air intake increases the velocity of the air flow until it hits and travels into the combustion chamber of the engine. It should alongside minimize any turbulence and flow restriction. It was felt necessary to achieve a state of the art inlet design for performing optimal air flow at any given speed with the advanced development of the jet engine. Also it was figured out to prevent any suppression of work in the first stage of compression by a jet engine by reducing the speed of air at just under subsonic level at the entrance of the compressor also keeping maintaining the necessary air flow at optimum level. This led to the invention of a new design called the “inverse droplet” of an air spike available in conus or semiconus type as the most commonly used idea under the design of hypersonic and supersonic inlet. A test in the port design state on a flow bench helps accomplishing the above tasks. Usually cars have dramatically improved performance if they have turbo or superchargers which enable a pressurized intake system leading to an extensive tweaking of intake system.

Modernized air intake systems consist basically of three parts, a throttle body, a mass flow sensor and an air filter. Most cars have a silencer to minimize any noise entering into the vehicle’s cabin. But performance lovers remove silencers as they impede the flow of air creating turbulence and reducing power.

Manufactured cars have a specific length of air intakes as provided for by the manufacturers to assist the flow of air in to the combustion system. Companies providing aftermarket products for cars have come up with relatively larger throttle bodies and filters to monitor the restriction of flow for a considerable increase in torque or power.

Porsche came up with a custom designed intake system in the 80s for their superior cars that included altered length of the intake system by shifting between a shorter and longer set of tubes using something called a butterfly valve, which created a small amount of pressure increasing the overall performance of the engine.
