You may need auto repair even if your car only suffered minor cosmetic damages in an accident.

If you have never been in a minor traffic accident, consider yourself very, very lucky. Most drivers at some point throughout their driving lifetime will get into a fender-bender of some sort. Either they will clip a vehicle in a parking lot; rear-end someone at a stoplight or fall victim to any number of common traffic accidents. Any of these scenarios can cause major damages at high speeds. When they happen at slow speeds, though, the auto repair needs incurred by the vehicle are usually extremely light.

Of course, everyone knows that when they are involved in even a minor accident, they should call the police department. You can use emergency numbers or the direct police department phone number. The important thing is to get an outside party there to witness the damages. In many states, if the damages are minor the parties involved have the option of not filing a formal report. Considered a "non-reportable accident", the auto repair or damages can be settled between the two parties outside of insurance.

If this is the route that you take during your next fender-bender, make sure that the damages incurred by the other vehicle will indeed equal to less than your insurance deductible. There is no reason to pay for something out of pocket if you could just turn it over to insurance. You have the chance to do this retro if you didn't have the police file an original report.

It is important for you to be completely sure that your car didn't suffer any major structural damage before you decide to forego insurance. Following the accident, take your car to a reputable body shop or even your dealership. Explain the situation to them and have them check the car over for any damages incurred that you may not have seen. Occasionally, structural damage can happen to the carriage that can't be seen from the outside of the car.

They will likely put the car up on the lift and check it over thoroughly. For example, in the case of rear-ending someone, your front bumper may not look damaged. Upon closer examination the structures behind the bumper have been bent. If you don't have someone look for this kind of auto repair, you may suffer later when larger things start to go wrong or if you try to sell the vehicle.

If you do find structural damage that wasn't visible by the police officer and yourself at the original accident scene, it is okay to back track on settling with the other party. You will merely need to call the other party to explain the situation and then call the police department with your claim number to have the report written and filed. Insurance will be glad to take over the issue at that time.

Auto repair in the event of a minor collision may not be obvious until a couple of days later.
