When it comes to car repair, perhaps one of the most important things you need to do and maintain is the braking system of the vehicle. These pads and shoes, not to mention the other elements of the system are critical in slowing and stopping the car on the road. Without proper function, they could fail and that could be an accident or even worse could happen. You can reduce your risks by simply taking steps right now to inspect them and have any necessary repairs.

What You Should Know

During all times of the year, the braking system of your vehicle could become worn. However, extreme conditions, including the wet weather seasons could lead to problems for some brakes. It is very important to take in your vehicle for car repair if you know there is any type of problem, this includes situations such as the following:

• You notice squeaking or squealing coming from your vehicle

• It takes longer for the car to stop

• You notice that the brakes are requiring more force to come to a complete stop

• The conditions of braking have changed in any way

• You notice any smoke coming from the tire

If these conditions are in fact occurring this may be an indication that you need an update or car repair. However, these are not the only times when you should have your system inspected. In fact, you should have it formally inspected by a trained technician at least one time every three to six months to ensure the vehicle is able to stop properly.

In addition, if you are a handy do it yourselfer, you can do the inspection on your own. To do so, pull out your owner's manual and following any troubleshooting or other directions provided. This will give you a good idea of when the manufacturer feels these systems need to be replaced or improved as well.

Most people will benefit, though, from a formal inspection from a trained professional. Find one that you trust to be honest and upfront with you about the actual condition of your vehicle. That is the only way to ensure the system is able to function properly afterwards. It is a good idea to report any changes in the braking system to your technician and ask for a full inspection during routine repairs.

Keep in mind that without a properly working braking system, you are putting your family and others at risk if you hit the road. Sometimes, you can do this type of inspection and replacement on your own, but for peace of mind and often times a guaranteed service, take your vehicle in for brake repair. You will appreciate knowing that your vehicle will be performing properly when you head out. Keep in mind that these systems should be inspected at least annually if not more so at the bare minimum.
