Car Repair: Finding a Shop You Will Love

If you're fearful of car repair because you think you’ll get scammed or cheated out of your money, it’s high time you found a shop you can trust. Believe it or not, they are out there! In fact, they are plentiful. But you have to do a little research in order to find them.

If you fear car repair because you think you'll get scammed or screwed out of your money, it's high time you found a shop you can trust. Believe it or not, they are out there! In fact, they are plentiful. But you have to do a little research in order to find them. Just picking one out of the phone book won't suffice. If you think this already sounds like more work than you're willing to put into it, just think about how nice it will feel the next time something goes wrong with your vehicle and you know just where to take it.

Ask a Friend

Everyone you know probably has a place they can recommend for car repair, but not every opinion is equal when looking for a good shop. If your secretary only gets an oil change every few months and does little else when it comes to her vehicle, she isn't necessarily the best source of information. If, on the other hand, Jim in accounting is always going on and on about cars, he will probably be a much better person to ask. On the other hand, be wary when a friend offers to do the work themselves. Things can get messy when you mix business and pleasure, after all. Sometimes it is best to stick with the pros, even if it costs you a bit more.

Develop a Relationship

Once you find a good car repair shop, stay there! Bring your vehicle there every time you have an issue or just need some maintenance. The more often they see you, the more likely it will be that they'll treat you with the respect a returning customer should get. If you get to know the staff and can shoot the breeze with the guy at the counter, you'll feel much better about bringing your vehicle in when something really goes wrong. It is within the realm of possibility that a shop would continue to scam a returning customer, but it's highly unlikely.

Educate Yourself

The best defense against bad mechanics is to know what you're talking about. This doesn't mean you need to be a car repair expert by any means. As you encounter problems, do your own research and try to figure out what the likely answer would be to a specific issue. You'll find plenty of message boards and websites that will have the answers. See how closely these answers match up to what your mechanic is telling you. If they don'tArticle Submission, ask why that is. You will find that you get better service when the shop knows you don't take a passive approach to your vehicle.
