The need for imminent auto repair can often be diagnosed using nothing but your eyes. The wear on a set of tires is a good example of this category. You can usually eyeball a tire and determine whether it needs to be replaced or not. If you can't, you can always use a penny to see for sure. Then there are the gauges and lights on the dashboard. Some people pay little attention to these, beyond checking to see how much gas they have left. These lights and gauges are important, however, and ignoring them could put your car in needless jeopardy.

Audio Clues
When most people think of audio warnings, they think of squealing and grinding coming from the brakes. Indeed, these sounds are some of the best warnings your car will give you in terms of needed auto repair. In addition, you should always be listening for unusual sounds coming from the engine. Knocking, hissing, rattling. There is no end to the number of troublesome sounds you might hear from your engine when something is wrong. You can take a quick glance at the internet in an attempt at self-diagnosis, but if you don't really know anything about mechanics, it's better to take your car to the shop for professional analysis.

Driving Clues
Sometimes auto repair is indicated not through audio or visual clues, but rather through a feeling. If your car begins to drift to the side of the road when you're driving down the highway, it's a clear-cut sign that you need a wheel alignment. Other problems, such as the engine stuttering when the car comes to a stop, rough idling, and difficulty moving into the next gear are all signs that you shouldn't ignore. Doing so could lead to bigger and more expensive problems.
