Frequent oil changes are an essential part of vehicle maintenance
because it keeps the engine clean. When fresh, clean lubricant
circulates throughout an engine, it lubricates the parts, and removes
combustion byproducts away from the engine. However, the lubricant
breaks down over time as it is exposed to heat from the engine, or other
strenuous driving conditions. Furthermore, a filter removes some of the
larger particulates from the lubricant as it removes them from the
engine. Depending on the engine's mileage and driving conditions, the
vehicle may need an oil change more often than the recommended increment
of every 5,000 miles. In these instances, it may be more convenient for
the car owner to do it themselves, especially if there is an added cost
associated with purchasing a specialized lubricant or filter. The
materials needed are basic; they include a clean rag, wrench, funnel,
and a container for the used lubricant. Consult the owner's manual or an
auto mechanic to help determine the amount and type of lubricant and
filter the vehicle needs. Additionally, a jack and jack stands will lift
and secure the vehicle.
First, always allow the vehicle to cool to a reasonable temperature. The
first step is to drain the old lubricant, which is located in the
reservoir. The pan, along with the drain plug, is located underneath the
car; a wrench can be used to loosen and remove the plug. Place the
container for the used lubricant in place before removing the drain
plug. Once the fluid has drained, replace the drain plug before adding
new lubricant, otherwise the new lubricant will leak out through the
drain hole.
The filter can be removed and replaced once the old fluid has finished
draining out of the car. The filter must be turned counter-clockwise
until it is loosened from the hold; a wrench can be used to loosen the
filter. Once removed, the new filter can be installed by screwing it in
clockwise. After changing the filter, take the funnel and pour new
lubricant into the engine. The final step is to make sure there are no
loose screws, and that the fluid levels are sufficient.
An oil change is a very simple car maintenance technique, but it is
