Most people will buy a brand new vehicle and never learn to properly care for it. It is important to learn how your car should be functioning in order to detect a problem with the vehicle. Many people, unless they hear a loud and disturbing sound from the engine or wheels, will assume that any old sound will be "natural," as if the car is designed to take it. That is simply not the case, and had they kept up with the recommended maintenance schedule, they would realize that regular repairs and upkeep are required to keep a vehicle running in top condition. Through their neglect, they are actually putting themselves and other drivers at a greater risk of an accident because of mechanical failure.
Of course, that doesn't have to happen. If you keep up with regular car repair and maintenance on your vehicle, you'll be able to drive it anytime without any issues or problems. The gas tank and oil reserve aren't the only things that must be properly maintained. Other fluids must be checked as well, and if they aren't, then that could result in the failure of your cooling system, brakes, or transmission, to name a few. Belts, gears, and other mechanical parts must be checked and repaired as well, as they will naturally wear out over time. Of course, tires must also be kept full and checked periodically to maintain safe driving conditions.
If any of these issues are ignored, then the potential for an accident becomes greater. While this may not be fatal or even injury-inducing, accidents are costly, even if it's just from a tire sidewall blowing out from not being filled properly. The engine block could seize up if the oil and oil filter haven't been changed, or if the coolant has not been checked. That is a much more costly accident, which is almost always the result of driver neglect, and will almost always result in totaling your vehicle, as a new engine block is a very, very expensive replacement part.
Proper car repair is the reason why states require inspections; they want to make sure that all vehicles on the road are safe and efficient to drive, and if they are not, they will require you to repair your car to make it pass inspection. If you ignore this, you cannot legally drive your vehicle, thus increasing the importance of proper car repair.`
