This festive season is expected end with a bang with the launch of Tata Merlin SUV. The car is expected to see the light of the day by the end of this month. The car is expected to be one of the biggest and eagerly awaited car launches from the house of Tata. This does make us wonder as to what extent do car makers address the need of the buyers. This surely looks like a bold step considering the last few months have been launches of value for money cars like the Toyota Etios Diesel and Etios Liva Diesel,Tata Merlin Price Review and Specifications Articles Chevrolet Defeat Diesel, and New Maruti Swift are the most remarkable one.

In fact it is the year of the hatchbacks in India and every maker wants to have his share of the small car pie. The SUV segment still seems to be in a deep slumber.

The SUV cars have their own fan following especially among off road enthusiasts who have want that adrenaline rush and don’t mind that extra splurging for the sake of fun and frivolous. The SUV comes around the range of Rs.6 lakh and upwards which is out of the reach of people looking for value for money car or even a second car.

Mahindra however has carved a new path with the launch of the Mahindra Bolero which is surprisingly priced at the range of Rs. 4 lakh to Rs. 6 lakh. Even if the cost factor is not the one to hamper the purchasing, there is the Kitna deti hain question aka mileage factor. There is also another reason which tends to make its ownership much far from the palms of any standard residing Indian customer i.e. Mileage. So to expect too much of the Merlin would be nothing short of blind positiveness. However one cannot help but think about the reputation of its existing Safari version and it could surely throw in an interesting mix.

The Tata Merlin is an improved Safari and therefore it is expected to have some bearing on the cost as well. The Merlin will surely carry its worthiness with some good facelifts and extended title tag and features. The car has also a lot of drawings from the Tata Aria.

Mahindra is already walking away smiling to the banks with its Mahindra XUV500 sold out for months to come and yet they are having a eagle’s eye on the upcoming Tata Merlin and are in no mood to let off their supremacy in the SUV segment. The Mahindra is all set release its own version of a cheap SUV as a rival to the Merlin. There are even reports of a mini xylo being ready for launch in the pipeline. All these developments and intense competition surely augurs well for the SUV segment which has not yet arrived to the front in India. The new Merlin is expected to compete with the likes of Mahindra Bolero and Chevrolet Tavera and its own existing Safari which will still be in production.
