The 3D Model and Your Automobile's Design

What is a 3D model, how does it work, and how has the automobile industry utilized this technology in the manufacturing process?

During the concept and development stages of most products, models are often made of the prototype of the object to see how it will look when it is completed. Anywhere from a toy manufacturer to an automobile manufacturer uses a small scale 3D model as an example of designs so that its looks can be studied before they go into production.

A 3D model can be made by hand, scanned on a computer, or made using mathematical equations. Early images for video game manufacturers were called "sprites" and were used before computers recorded and used real time images that were being used for product development long before the use of the personal computer to create the graphic images we know today.

Today, most industries develop and use 3D models for research. These include the medical organ models for medical training, character models for the movie and video game industry, chemical compounds for the scientific community, and landscape, building, and vehicle designs for architects and engineers. The science community also has begun to use 3D models to study geographical features on a regular basis.

There are two different types of 3D models. These are solid and shell or boundary. In a solid model the object's volume is portrayed making for a more realistic model. These are more difficult to construct and are mostly used in the fields of engineering and medicine. The boundary type represents the surface of an object and are easier to construct and work with. These are usually used in video games and movies.

One of the most well known usages of a 3D model is in the automobile industry. Every concept car starts with a drawing. These early sketches later become hard drawings, which later get shaded, colored, and tweaked so that the engineers can see if the concept can actually become reality. These plans are then transferred to 3D so that the manufacturers can fit all the necessary pieces together. These models help the designers finalize all the vehicle's details. By using a 3D model, engineers and manufactures can see all parts of the car to make sure that all the possible options, colors, and trim packages can be considered. They also "drive" the concept vehicles on various surfaces so that they can see how they drive and look in actual road situations.
