Get one important thing done.

Check your to-do list (if you are like me this list might just be a jumbled mess in your head) and pick one thing that has importance that you can do in under an hour and do it. Shut the door, don't answer the phone and ask your co-workers or family for some privacy. Most people have a huge list of things that need to be done and a whole bevy of distractions that hit them on a daily basis. Hours will go by and it will feel like we've done nothing productive. This can be extremely frustrating and demoralizing. Starting off the day productively will put you in the right frame of mind for the rest of the day.

Remind Yourself Why You do It.

It's inevitable that at some point in the day you will start to waver. Things will start to overwhelm you and your productivity will be at a stand still. When you find yourself at this point, sit back in your chair, close your eyes and remind yourself what you are doing it all for. It might be family. It might be money and fame. It might be to achieve a promotion. It doesn't really matter what it is. It just has be something important to you. Everyone has something that drives and inspires them and everyone needs to remember what that is in that moment of turmoil and doubt.

Set a Goal

When you set a goal it immediately focuses your mind. A goal can be a long-term one like I want to retire by 45 or it could be a short term one like I will make 30 sales calls by lunch. Make the goal realistic and then immediately do something that will help you achieve that goal. You can even set hourly goals if it helps. There are some days when everyone needs that kind of focus.

Watch a Motivational Video.

There are thousands of them out there. Find several that really motivate you and when you are feeling the need for a pep talk, start one of them up. Lou Holtz and Dewitt Jones have some great ones but the all-time classic that is guaranteed to wake up the motivational fire in you is the speech that Jim Valvano gave at the ESPY awards when he was dying of cancer. The positive feeling these videos give you will translate to instant productivity.

Life can be struggle and even on the best of days it's tough to find the focus, but there are ways to jump-start your personal motivation. Even the most successful people have moments of self-doubt and burnout. Find what works for you and have a productive day on the way to achieving your goals.
