A Babymoon: The What, Why and How of a Pre-baby Vacation

The long-standing tradition of a honeymoon takes a new twist. Enter: the babymoon. Couples are getting away for a final pre-baby escape

If you’re expecting a baby, you and your partner are probably excited about all the changes coming your way. A new little life is about to join yours, and life will never be the same. With all the newness and excitement, it is important for you and your partner to stay connected through the changes. One way to do this is by taking a babymoon.

A what? A babymoon! When a couple gets married, it is tradition to take a honeymoon and get away and enjoy time together. In recent years, the idea has been applied to soon-to-be parents. Why not get away, enjoy some quality time together before your new baby arrives? After all, pretty soon you’ll be up for late-night or early-morning feedings, changing diaper after diaper and life will just be different. Taking one last trip as a couple would be a way to make lasting memories with just the two of you.

There are lots of ways to go about babymooning. A babymoon is meant to be a final hurrah of sorts before your son or daughter makes a grand appearance, so you’ll want to make the most of it! Depending on what you can afford, you can go for a week or just a weekend. The important thing is that you go.

So where should you babymoon? Consider getting away to a spa or resort that specialized in pre-birth getaways. Select a location that is relaxing and rejuvenating. Consider heading to the coast or lake house. Perhaps a cabin in the woods is more your style. For some, an upscale spa in a big city is the ticket. Wherever you go, make sure you will be able to relax and enjoy time with your partner.

While on your pre-baby getaway, consider doing some things that you just haven’t had time to do. Take some time to make incredible memories that you’ll be able to share with your child some day. Consider having professional photos taken of you and your partner and your glowing belly. Sweet, tender moments captured in a photo will remind you of your getaway forever.

Now that you’ve decided that a babymoon is something you must do, it is important to consider the timing of your trip. Obviously, you don’t want to go too close to your due date. You’ll want to be closer to home in case your bundle of joy decides to show up a little early. Consider traveling some time early in your third trimester. You’ll still be somewhat comfortable and able to enjoy the getaway much more. If you’re flying to your destination, be sure to get your doctor’s approval before you book your flight. Make sure to spend some tiem having fun on your trip, but don’t underestimate the value of a relaxing time as well. When you return home, you’ll be ready for the final countdown to your baby’s arrival.

While a babymoon may seem like a new and novel idea, it is one that will probably become increasingly popular in coming years. Couples are trying hard to stay connected as their lives morph from “the two of us” to “family”. By taking time out and investing in each other, this transition in your life can be even more meaningful.
