A New York City Street Style Guide on 2011’s Fashion Trends

You can incorporate and layer pieces that you already have in your wardrobe underneath to create a variety of different looks. like the one shown at the Etro Spring/Summer 2011 show.

As seasons change in a year, trends evolve, and what follows are great defining pieces for the upcoming seasons. Living in one of the most fashion forward cities in the world means New York City fashionistas are at the forefront of the season’s staples. Check out this street style guide on which must-have items you need to stock up on for 2011.

• Sheer Maxi Dresses

Maxi dresses made a big comeback a couple of years ago but quickly died out. For a fresh, street style take on this, go for the sheer version. You can incorporate and layer pieces that you already have in your wardrobe underneath to create a variety of different looks.

• Punk Fashion

Punk is definitely not dead, and it most certainly won’t go anywhere, as displayed at Balmain’s 2011 Spring/Summer show. The key is to add just a touch of punk—like a small rip here, a few studs there—so you don’t wind up looking like a Halloween costume or Sid Vicious on a bad day. Try something pretty and feminine, such as a mini floral dress and pair it with a leather vest or combat boots to give it an edge.

• Crop Tops

Alicia Silverstone made the crop top famous back in the nineties when she portrayed her character Cher in the movie “Clueless,” but the modern version is much more wearable. For 2011, the crop top is about showing off a toned midriff without revealing too much skin, as shown at the Paul and Joe runway show for their Spring/Summer collection. Rock a cropped top with high-waist pants or skirt to show just a sliver of tummy. It’s classy and sexy.

• Tail Hems

Tail hem dresses and tops are hot for 2011. Dresses that are cut shorter in the front and longer in the back are playful and sexy, like the one shown at the Etro Spring/Summer 2011 show.

• Wide Leg Pants

The best thing about 70s inspired wide leg pants—like these shown at Marc Jacobs—is they are flattering for almost all body types. For 2011, wide leg pants are loose fitting, high-waisted and look great with sky high platforms and a crisp white top.
