Any type of metal lathe, be it a brand new one or they be used metal lathes, these all have instructions to its proper use.

Any kind of metal lathe, be it a brand new one or they be used metal lathes, these all have directions to its proper usage. The instructions are rather simple and will be easy to follow. If the machine was not issued with a written instructions, there can be online sources that may be had for the particular machine that you purchased.

Firstly, make sure not to run the metal lathe cold. Warm it up starting at the speed of around 1000 rpm for ten minutes and get it well lubricated. Check on the tools, get them ready and ensure they are all tight.

Afterwhich, find the tool holder and place the tool block on it. Look for the spot where you can put the insert cutter. Tighten the tool block as tight as possible. Every cutter has an insert that allows Z axis cutting or the type of cut which is from left to right.

Now, locate the tail stock. This is the point where the drill chuck is inserted. This tail stock is used to drilling holes into the metal. For precision depths to the cuts, locate the crank found at the end of the measuring apparatus.

The fourth step is to stop the turning spindle then set the machine to zero point. Get a tool holder, adjust it to 0.5 inch between the tip of the tool and the work piece. Tighten by sliding this in and out. To create an X axis, pull the tool towards you. Find the micrometer wheel then correct it to zero. Then with 0.5 inch distance, start moving toward the work piece. This will now be your Z zero point.

The fifth step will be to set your X zero point by moving the Z axis to the spindle and slide it with 0.5 inch block between the work piece and the tool. Bring it well beyond the piece, set the X axis micrometer to zero and turn the wheel 0.5 inch away. Notice how the Z axis was doen in the same manner but the turn of the wheel was to your direction.

Sixth, take the tool away at 0.25 inch from the work piece on the Z and X axis. Step away a bit before you start the spindle yet again.

Lastly, bring the X axis into the depth desired. If you like to take out 0.5 inch from the material, remove 0.25 on both sides of the material.
