A Review of the GBC ShredMaster RSX128 Paper Shredder

Does your office need a paper shredder with an extremely high security rating, as well as a lot of great features? If so, check out the GBC ShredMaster RSX128, a feature-laden device that offers top-notch security. Here are the RSX128 strengths and weaknesses.

Strengths:

• The RSX128 can shred up to 12 sheets of paper in a single pass. It will also destroy credit cards and electronic media, specifically CD's and DVD's. The cutting head will also do away with staples and paper clips.
• This shredder offers Level 3 security, so this is a great machine to use if you're overly concerned about identity theft or compliance with federal regulations such the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA). This is a cross-cut device that has the ability to turn your documents into bits measuring 1/6" x 1-7/9".
• The RSX128 has a separate feed opening for your CD's and DVD's and it will store your plastic waste in a separate bag so you can recycle your paper bits. This device has an 8-gallon waste compartment so you won't have to empty it as often.
• There are casters pre-installed so that moving the device around doesn't take much effort. This is always a nice touch, even though the machine itself weighs only 23 pounds. (It will get heavier when the waste bin is full, obviously.)
• This shredder is just under 11 inches wide, so you can easily store it right next to your desk. If you wish, you could even store the device under it because it's less than 2 feet tall. However, if you do that, you will need to pull the machine out when you need to use it. Plus, the RSX128 operates quietly so it won't be a distraction, no matter how close it is to you.
• The RSX128's feed opening will turn red if you try to stuff too much paper into it. This will let you know you need to remove some sheets and thus, you won't have to deal with a jam.
• As with their other paper shredders, GBC offers a great warranty. With the RSX128, you'll get 20 years of limited protection on the cutting mechanism, as well as two year's worth of coverage on everything else.

Weaknesses:

• This is a device that is good for use by one or two people, but it's not really fit to be used by a lot of people over the course of a day because it was designed for moderate, not heavy-duty, use.
• Although this machine can get rid of your unwanted CD's and credit cards, it cannot destroy floppy disks. Many organizations no longer use floppies. Still, this is something to note.
• The RSX128 lacks an angled head so, as mentioned before, you will need to pull out the machine to use it if you store it under a table or desk.

Finally, the GBC ShredMaster RSX128 is available for under $400, so most business owners should be able afford one. And that's really a reasonable price because although this device does have a few weaknesses, it has even more strengths, including great features that offer protection and convenience. Overall, this is a great paper shredder and one that's highly recommended.
