They will be able to run a diagnostic check and determine what the problem is.

If you are driving along and your check engine light should come on, the first thing to do is make sure there isn’t a serious, immediate problem. Check your other lights and needles to make sure there isn’t an obvious problem that needs to be addressed, such as low oil. Driving your car even a few more miles in an overheated state could do irreversible harm to your engine and cost thousands of dollars to repair.

Check your gas cap. It may seem silly, but the check engine light will come on if your gas cap is loose or missing. Even if you failed to turn it the required number of clicks after your last fill-up, it could be enough to set off the sensor. It’s not that a loose gas cap is enough of a problem that the computer demands auto repair, but that a small amount of gas through the escape hatch will alert the computer to a problem. It isn’t looking for loose caps so much as it is a gas leak.

If you are unable to diagnose the problem yourself, you’ll need to take it into the auto repair shop and have it looked at. It is a big mistake to just ignore the light and continue driving like nothing is wrong. More than a few cars have been the victim of faulty check engine lights, but this is something you’ll want a professional to tell you—don’t just assume this to be the case. If you drive it for miles and don’t have the problem addressed, small problems could turn into big ones very quickly.
