If you've been looking for a personal paper shredder, you know that there are a lot of them on the market. That makes it difficult to determine which one is best for your needs. During your search, you'll find a lot of shredders made by Fellowes. This company makes a lot of great machines and they have a number that are ideal for personal use including the DS-1 and Powershred P70CM. Here's a comparison of these machines so you can determine which one is right for you:

  • The DS-1. The DS-1 is a cross-cut shredder that's designed for home and small office use. This machine can shred up to 11 sheets at a time and it can run for 5 minutes before the motor needs a break. (This break lasts about 20 minutes.) The DS-1 has durable cutters that are made out of steel. They're strong enough to handle some non-paper items such as credit cards, staples, and paper clips. They can even tear up envelopes. The DS-1 has a 4.75-gallon waste bin that can be easily removed by stepping down on a latch. The waste bin is mesh so it's easy to see how full it's getting. This shredder comes with Fellowes' SafeSense feature which causes operation to cease when your hands are in the vicinity of the feed opening. Other features include a reverse mode, automatic shredding, and a 9-inch feed opening. Plus, the DS-1 looks great. Its cutters are backed by a 5-year warranty while the rest of the machine is covered for 1 year.

  • The Powershred P70CM. The P70CM is also designed for use at home or in a small office. This shredder can take care of 7 sheets of paper at a time, and the cutters can shred credit cards and staples. The machine can run continuously for up to 2 minutes and then it needs 4 minutes to cool down. The P70CM is also a cross-cut machine and it has a 9-inch feed opening so you can shred letter- and legal-sized documents. Like the DS-1, this machine has a mesh waste bin and it can hold 4.25 gallons of material. The P70CM lacks the DS-1's SafeSense feature; instead it has a safety interlock switch to prevent unauthorized use. This machine's features include the ability to start shredding when paper is inserted in the feed opening, as well as a reverse mode to help you deal with jams. Finally, the P70CM's cutters are protected by a 3-year warranty while everything else is backed for a year.

The Fellowes DS-1 and Powershred P70CM are pretty similar. They can both shred a decent amount of paper and their waste bins are just about the same size. Also, they both can get rid of document fasteners and credit cards. However, the DS-1 has the edge over the P70CM for a couple of reasons. First, it has SafeSense technology. This feature makes the shredder incredibly safe and it provides much more protection than an interlock switch. (You'll really appreciate this feature if there are pets or kids in your home.) Also, the DS-1 has better warranty coverageArticle Search, so you get more bang for your buck. So be sure to check out the DS-1 if you need a personal paper shredder. You won't regret it.
