It eventually dawned on me that we're in the 21st century – I know, it took me a while. To be frank I'd never even thought about owning my own online store – it was just one of those things 'out there' that other people did. As far as I was concerned my high street store was quite enough. My store is on a side street in the town and I have quite a few loyal customers.

To be frank I'd never even thought about owning my own online store – it was just one of those things 'out there' that other people did. As far as I was concerned my high street store was quite enough. My store is on a side street in the town and I have quite a few loyal customers. A few had asked me whether I have an online store, and I started to realise that with an on-line shop I could reach a much wider market than the few people who happened to trickle down the side street. I had a lot of concerns about this but they were soon laid to rest when I researched the idea and discovered how straight forward it was.

One of my friends recommend a organization that had built their on-line store so I decided to give them a ring. I was nervous as I knew absolutely nothing about online stores. What happened if I did not understand what they were talking about. However, I was kindly surprised, not only that they were exceptionally friendly, but that they actually spoke English, and I understood what they were saying!

They took time to find out what my ideas were for branding, customer base and design of the on-line shop. These weren't the technical questions I was expecting, but questions about running a shop – which I was quite comfortable with. I detailed everything in an email and they went through each phase with me. I must say as time progressed far from being nervous I was getting quite excited!

It seemed like next to no time before they announced that my online shop was ready. I was especially excited, and typed in the address straight away. I was so impressed and happy with the result. The shop looked professional and new. I found myself browsing the shop, and realised that it was so straight forward to use that if I enjoyed using it, so would my customers. I also liked the fact that they had implemented certain safety procedures so my customers details would be kept safe.

One of the aspects that the company discussed with me is optimisation for the search engines. Since a lot of individuals searched Google, seo was of great consequence to make sure my website got found. The company really had thought of everything and each individual page had separate seo strategies installled into it.

So now my online shop is up and running, and my customers are pleased. I am even getting orders from individuals living in other towns and this never happened with my high street shop. The next challenge though is to continue the search engine optimisation (SEO) process, because it's not just something that's built in to a website and left – it's an on-going procedure. A little like swimming I suppose – getting to the surface is terrific news if you don't have gills, but you have to keep paddling to stay there.
