DFG's E Titan Wire is an electric wire binding
system that is meant for ultra heavy duty use. In this review, we will
take a closer look at this machine a list what we consider to be some
of its strengths and weaknesses.
Strengths:
DFG is making a name for itself by creating feature-rich
machines that are built to last. The E Titan Wire is certainly no
exception. This machine features all metal construction of all major
components, including the base, table, handle and casing. All of the
internal mechanisms are also make of heavy duty steel. It sure seems to
us that DFG constructed this machine to provide the user with years of
service without requiring any major repairs or maintenance.
The E Titan Wire features one of the highest volume punching capacities
that we have found on any of the desktop sire binding systems that we
have come across. DFG has termed their punching technology
"turbopunch," and the name seems fitting. The E Titan Wire can easily
punch up to twenty eight sheets at a time, a capacity which will almost
certainly help productivity in your punching and binding process.
The three to one pitch, square hole pattern that the E Titan Wire uses
offers you some flexibility in your document production, giving you the
option of binding with double loop wire, GBC Proclick, or spiral coil
styles. This is a great option to have if you produce internal (less
formal looking) and external (higher quality) documents on a regular
basis. They also produce this machine in a 2:1 pitch version.
Wire closers come in all different qualities, and we found the one on
the E Titan Wire to be one of the strongest, most durable we have ever
seen. The two adjustment knobs let the user fine tune the process to
the point that every book will be closed in a uniform fashion. The two
steel blocks used in the process look like they will stand up to years
of use without warping. All in all, a really impressive wire closing
setup.
Here is a quick rundown of some of the
other things we really like about this machine: The punching pins are
fully disengageable, which means that you can cleanly punch holes in
just about any size document; there is a continuous punching guide that
helps immensely with the two punch process needed for larger documents
such as legal size. A sizing guide that helps you to find the correct
wire size for your project; a foot control pedal that allows you to
operate the machine, leaving your hands free and increasing
productivity.
Weaknesses:
One of the most glaring weaknesses of the E Titan Wire is
that it has just an eleven inch punch. There are machines out there
such as the Akiles WireMac E that feature fourteen inch, or legal size
punching throats. They might be a better choice if you think that your
organization will have to bind documents of that size on a regular
basis.
We certainly missed having a wire hanger
on the E Titan Wire. This omission, without a doubt, reduces the
productivity level of this machine.
The location
of the wire closer on the top of the machine is a little unwieldy. We
found it difficult to lift the book up to the wire closer without
having pages fall off the spine.
DFG is a
relatively new manufacturer and their customer service and warranty
service can sometimes leave something to be desired. Luckily their
machines don't break very often. However, if you do have a problem you
may get a bit of a run around trying to get it fixed.
