Everyday we get a lot of questions about the
products we sell including binding machines, paper shredders, and
laminators. We though that we would share and answer the most frequently
asked questions about pouch laminators so you can decide if this is the
type of machine you need. Let's get started....
What is a pouch laminator? A pouch laminator
is a machine that you can use to encapsulate documents and photographs
in film. You use laminating pouches for this, which are essentially
folded pieces of plastic coated with adhesive. Laminating your items
will make them last longer and doing so can also enhance their colors.
Are these machines easy to use? The vast
majority of them are. With most laminators, you can often just turn the
device on, let it heat up, and then feed your document into it without a
lot of fussing around. If you're new to laminating, there's bound to be
a device that you'll find easy to use.
What size laminator should I get? You should
get a laminator that's large enough to process your materials. If
you're going to be laminating smaller items such as name tags, a small
machine will do the trick but it won't be too helpful if you end up
needing to work with larger materials. People often choose a machine
that has a feed opening that's at least 8.5" wide because it will allow
them to laminate both large and small items. The choice is up to you.
My laminator has a cold setting. What is it for?
A cold setting is one of the most sought-after pouch laminator
features. It allows you to use pressure-sensitive pouches instead of
thermal ones so you safely process items that might be damaged by heat.
These include photographs and just about anything printed with
water-based ink.
What's a carrier and why should I use one?
Every pack of laminating pouches comes with a carrier, which pretty much
looks like a file folder. You stick your document in it before feeding
it into the machine to prevent hot adhesive from oozing out of the
pouch. Melted adhesive can damage the interior of the machine and lead
to expensive repairs or the need to replace the entire device. In short,
using a carrier is highly recommended.
Which companies make high-quality laminators?
There are a number of companies that make high-quality machines. Two of
the most well-known are Fellowes and GBC, companies that are known for
making first-rate office machines and supplies. Lesser-known companies
include Akiles, Lamitek, Royal Sovereign, and Tamerica. All of these
companies manufacture terrific laminators and you really can't go wrong
with a machine made by one of them.
