A commercial-grade paper shredder is a must-have item if your office needs to regularly destroy a lot of documents. If your workplace is in need of one and you are not working with highly classified documents, a great choice would be the GBC ShredMaster GLS28. Here are the strengths and weaknesses of this device so you can learn more about this product.

• The GLS28 is a machine that can shred a whole lot at once: it's been constructed so it can shred up to 28 sheets of paper in one pass or up to 22 feet of material in a minute. It also has a continuous-duty motor so it's great for large jobs or constant use by several different people.
• Since the motor is one of the continuous-duty variety, it's been designed to withstand a lot of use and isn't as likely to overheat or wear out as fast as a non-continuous motor.
• The GLS28 is able to destroy paper that's both letter- and legal-sized, thanks to a 9-inch feed opening (also known as a "throat"). In addition to paper, this device can destroy digital media such as CD's, and credit and debit cards. (There are separate throats for electronic media and paper.) It will also get rid of any paper clips or staples left in your documents.
• This is a strip-cut device that's been given a Level 2 security rating, so it would be a good choice if your workplace needs to get rid of business correspondence, invoices, and the like. The shreds the GLS28 produces are 1/4" wide.
• This unit will turn on automatically when items are inserted into the feed opening. It also has a reverse mode in case there's a jam or overfeed. The machine will also clear itself of any leftover waste by running in both forward and reverse mode after shredding.
• The waste compartment can hold up to 30 gallons of detritus. The compartment is located in a drawer so you can easily change the bag and get rid of your shreds.
• This device has great warranty coverage, with GBC offering two years of protection on parts and labor, plus a year's worth of coverage on the cutting head. You can also get your machine serviced on-site at no additional cost, if necessary.

Weaknesses:

• Although this machine can shred a lot of stuff at once, some users may need a device with a higher security level. If that's the cause, the GBC GLX20 which offers Level 3 security and can shred 20 sheets per pass, would be a better choice.
• The GLS28 cannot shred floppy disks, despite its ability to pulverize items such as CD's.
• This is obviously a very large device (it's almost 3 feet tall) that will take up a lot of space and cannot be stored under a desk.
• The GLS28 was designed to be used by multiple users and its price reflects this: it has a list price of just under $1,800.00, so it's not the best machine to get if you'll only use a shredder occasionally or have a small budget.

The GBC ShredMaster GLS28 does have its weaknesses, but they are more than overshadowed by the machine's strengths. This is a great machine for offices that need to shred a lot and don't need a device offering Level 5 or 6 security. Plus, the warranty can't be beat, making this the perfect choice for businesses wanting a great commercial-grade shredder with a lower level of security.
