How and Why Photography Businesses Can and Should Share Images Over a Networks

The photography industry is competitive. To thrive in this market, a photographer needs to produce quality at prices that create as much value per $100 spent as possible. One way to do this and speed up the tedious, but necessary, tasks of file management is to share images over a network. Utilizing a network removes the need to move images around on external hard drives. In addition, it allows multiple people to access files in a folder at one time (not the same file but a different file in the folder). To share a file in Vista, the currently most popular operating system in the world, simply follow the following steps:

Method 1

Move files to the public folders. If the files are in a public folder and you share them from that location then everyone who uses the computer and everyone on the network will be able to see those see and use those folders. If you so desire, you can restrict people to simply viewing files and not actually editing those files.

1. Choose which files you wish to share.

2. Right Click on the file you wish to share.

3. Click on the Share Tab.

4. Click on the Share Button.

5. Add the name of the person with whom you want to share the file.

6. Set the permission level which you want to give a particular person.

Once you are able to share image files over the network, there are a number of ways to effectively utilize this capacity.

For example, use your old computers to run batch processes. If you have been in the photography business for long, you probably have a number of old computers lying around with expensive and perfectly functional (but outdated) software on it. Now that these computers can easily access your images over the network, use them to add copyright information, resize for web, and run contrast actions against your images. Utilizing the computing power of these old computers over the network, will allow your main machine to remain lean and mean so that you can get your creative work completed more efficiently.
