Strengths:
A
manual start and stop button begins use by turning on the
machine. Items are fed through two individual slots, one for CDs
and one for disks and credit cards. A safety guard allows media to
slide into the blades while keeping fingers and ties out. The
plastic shield can be removed as needed. The reverse switch
effortlessly clears up any potential jamming that may occur.
A
robust, maintenance free motor powers the blades. It is rated
for continuous duty, meaning that it won't require frequent cool
down periods as seen in many smaller shredders. This will save
you time instead of requiring you to wait idly for your shredder
to be ready.
Each slot is sized appropriately for the
media entering it and can take one piece of media at a time.
Approximately 800-1200 pieces can be shred in one hour. Tiny remnants
only 5/16 inch by 13/16 inch remain and are virtually impossible
to reassemble.
Minute particles drop into separate
waste containers. The CD/DVD slot holds one cubic foot of waste
while the other slot can hold .8 cubic feet of scrap. That's about 7.5
gallons and 6 gallons of storage space, respectively.
As
with many Intimus shredders, the manufacturer offers a five year
guarantee on the cutting shafts. Parts and labor are
covered by a one year warranty.
Weaknesses:
This machine does not shred paper. This is
unfortunate, since that would make this a convenient, all-in-one
device. However, Intimus does make shredders that can take in
paper as well as multimedia.
Weighing just under 100
pounds, this machine will be bulky and awkward to move. Lack of
casters adds to the immobility. We suggest using a dolly if
you do need to move it.
This machine is lacking
automatic functions, such as an automatic on/off sensor or problem
indicators. Even so, it's not difficult to flip the switch to
turn the machine on. We don't think most users will find this to
be much of an inconvenience.
The waste slots don't hold
very much volume. However, the items being shred are small
themselves and probably won't fill up the waste bins too quickly.
The Intimus 502CD Multimedia Shredder is a great option for
any office needing to shred CD-ROMs and other electronic media. If
your office already has a paper shredder, this is an excellent
supplemental piece of equipment. Any CD, DVD, and 3.5 inch floppy disk
can now be safely discarded, keeping confidential data secure in the
