Laguna Beach Photographers: Succeed at Newborn Photography

Orange County photographers have a great opportunity in Newborn photography. This article looks at ways in to succeed.

Newborn photography is one of the fastest growing genres; however, photographing babies is someone different from photographing someone who can understand and respond to you. This article looks at some things a photographer can do to succeed in the newborn photograph industry.

1. There is never a better time to setup a long term relationship than at the birth of a new baby. Quite literally a relationship developed at this time can be for life. A good relationship will make it likely you will be the photographer at the first birthday, start of school, senior portraits and perhaps even the new person's wedding.

2. Schedule looker sessions when photographing newborns. When dealing with this young group you simply need to be patient. The baby will sleep when he wants, eat when he wants, wet when he wants and cry when he wants. You will need to work around his moods. Doing all of this take time. Charge more for your extra time. Most parents want quality and they realize that when working with their newborn things don't always work like clockwork.

3. Make sure you have a supply of cute clothing available. Right now nude babies in hats are popular. In addition, ask the parents several of their outfits.

4. When shooting the mother with the newborn, avoid shots of the mother’s belly. She did after all just have a baby. She will likely appreciate your keeping the camera pointed at her face as opposed to her body at this time. But this is just what generally happens. Ask your client specifically what they are looking for.

5. When you have parents who are kissing a baby, make sure they do not pucker during the kiss. While in real life where people are in motion there is nothing wrong with puckering, in a photo it looks awkward. Just have the person giving the kiss press her lips against the baby receiving it. This rule applies to all kissing subjects.

6. Keep plenty of supplies - diapers, wipes, etc. on hand. Even with all these supplies and the utmost precautions it's inevitable that you will find yourself being wet on from time to time. Don't where a silk tie when photographing newborns.
Photographing newborns can be a rewarding experience. Following the above suggestions will make the shoot more successful.
