Mexico’s Large International Ports

Learn the five major ports in Mexico.

Mexico is home to many international ports viable for shipping which is one of the country’s premiere sources of income. Ports vary in sizes and trade functions. Small ports usually handles small ships and administers less important imports while big ports controls large amounts of shipments and freights. There are five major porst in Mexico that handle most of the country's imports and exports. These five ports which handle almost 80% of Mexico’s ocean freight are the following:

1.      Puerto de Tampico – Handling enough traffic that it rivals other major ports of the world, Puerto de Tampico is considered the busiest, most important port in the Gulf of Mexico. This port, located on the country's Gult Coast, is the country's most modern seaport. This port is used mainly for the import of goods such as petrochemicals, steal, wood and other industrial goods. In fact, Tampico has the latest and best equipment for loading today’s oil tankers.

2.      Port of Veracruz – Located over 300 kilometers east-southeast of Mexico City, Veracruz port is also known as the country’s ‘backbone of economy’. Almost majority of general cargo, especially goods headed to and from Mexico City are docked in Veracruz. You can also find water sports and sport fishing at Veracruz.

3.      Puerto de Guaymas – This port is located 400 south of the border with the United States. This is the center of just about everything in Mexico: manufacture, shipping, tourism and commerce. Export products include sulfuric acid, copper, wheat, and other crops grown in the region (cotton, vegetables, fruits, etc.).

4.      Puerto de Mazatlan – Also known as "The place of the deer", this is an importa port for cruise ships and ferries bearing toursists. Aside from tourist industry, it is also a popular trade center of agricultural-based industries like food processing and brewing; however, the port handles many industrial cargoes like rolled steel, containers, and automobiles. It also handles large volumes of bulk products and fish meal.

5.      Puerto de Manzanillo – This port sees the highest volume of import and export cargo. This port handles exports like fish, corn, copra, lemons, bananas, canned foods, wine, lumberFree Reprint Articles, and minerals.
