Paper shredders are excellent for keeping
your information safely contained when disposing. But sensitive
information comes in a variety of media other than just paper. For
example, one has personal details on their credit card, many people keep
backup information on CDs or DVDs, and organizations have been storing
material on floppy disks for years. How do you get rid of all these
items safely? The answer to that is a multimedia shredder. These
specialty devices are very helpful in destroying classified materials in
several different forms. Here is a brief look at a few of the options
available.
Dahle 30406 Level 2 Strip
Cut Multimedia Shredder. Designed for medium to large offices, this
shredder easily handles CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, and paper in stacks of
up to 35 sheets. Items enter the device through a 12-inch opening and
shred as fast as 30 feet per minute. There is a guide strip that nestles
into the larger opening and creates a slot sized for media components.
Everything is shred into narrow ¼" strips and float down into a spacious
35-gallon waste bin.
Dahle 30414
Level 3 Cross Cut Multimedia Shredder. This is essentially a cross cut
version of the Dahle 30406. However, there are a few differences. As
with most shredders, the higher security of the cross cut action cuts
down on capacity. This shredder can handle the same items but only 25
sheets of paper instead of 35 and things are shred at 23 feet per
minute. It is also more expensive. The selling point for the 30414 is
the higher level 3 security rating.
Formax
FD8702CC Cross Cut Multimedia Shredder. Any size office would benefit
from the Formax FD8702CC. With commercial grade quality in a compact
package, this device easily tears through CDs, DVDs, DV tape, ZIP/floppy
disks, credit cards, and paper up to 40 sheets. Materials are shred
into small pieces measuring 5/32" by 1-5/8" in size, earning a secure
level 3 rating. A 21-gallon waste bucket catches the confetti pieces and
sends an alert to the user when full. The FD8702CC also offers a
self-diagnostic system for any issues that may arise as well as a host
of other intuitive features.
Intimus
Multimedia Particle Cut Shredder. Of all the devices on this list, this
offering destroys the most types of multimedia. Built for corporations
and large offices, the Intimus Particle-Cut Shredder efficiently
destroys CDs, DVDs, floppy disks, 100mb and 250mb Zip disks, 4mm DAT
tapes, and LS120 superdisks. You might, however, notice the glaring
omission: paper. The blades of this machine are built to handle all
kinds of items, but not paper. As a result, this shredder is mainly
recommended as a companion device next to paper shredder.
HSM
411.2 OMDD High Security Multimedia Shredder. HSM makes a shredder
built to handle the multimedia needs of a large business or office. It
can securely dispose of CDs, DVDs, and credit cards. Once again, this is
designed as a companion device and as such is not designed to shred
paper. The 411.2 creates particles only 2.2mm by 4mm in size, tiny
enough for a high level 6 security rating. Shreds fall into a large 38
gallon waste bin. With a waste basket that large and a wide 16" throat
opening, it is odd that this machine cannot handle paper. However, it is
perfect for offices needing to meet NSA security requirements for
document disposal.
As you
can see, multimedia shredders are a great addition to any office. Which
one is right for you will depend on your current situation. Already have
a paper shredder? Then one that solely shred media might be right for
you. Or maybe you're looking to upgrade to a device that can handle both
paper and digital media. Either way, using a multimedia shredder can
help you keep your office and personal information safe.
