Newport Beach Photographers: Determine your Primary Market

The Newport Beach Photography industry is competitive. To succeed in this environment, a photographer needs to determine his primary market.

he photography industry is crowded with a number of talented and experience professionals. In order to get some attention among all of the noise, a photographer needs to determine the primary market that matches his style.

Why is doing this important? Because the photography industry is too diverse for a single young photographer to become an expert in every genre. Just as the law is too complex for an attorney to practice in all areas, there is too much to know for a young photographer to succeed in all areas. As he gains experience the breath of his work will grow and he can enter several areas; or if he has a great skill for marketing he can run a studio that produces different genres by hiring other photographers who do have the needed knowledge.

Another reason a photographer should specialize in one type of photography is the cost associated with branding. In order to for a photographer to gain significant market share of a particular genre in his community, the public needs to have associate a particular photographer with a particular idea.

Normally this is easier to do for a narrowly focused message. Tying a photographers name to newborn portraits for example is a much easier task then newborn portraits and fashion photography. The two ideas in the minds of many are not compatible. If ideas are not on the surface compatible, they require more thought and attention to make sense of them. The public, saturated with messages, is simply unlikely to give that required time and attention.

What are the areas from which a new photographer can choose? Here is a partial list:

1. Newborn Photography
2. Weddings
3. Commercial Real Estate Photography
4. Equestrian Photography
5. School Portraits
6. Fashion Photography
7. Family Portraits
8. Business Portraits

Any area in the photography industry is competitive. There are not many technical barriers to entry to become a photographer. Many people start their business with simply a few thousand dollars worth of equipment. To compete effectively with all these new peopleFree Web Content, a photographer should choose an area for which he wants to be known. That doesn'’t mean he can’t accept jobs in other areas but that he should promote one area at a time.
