Starting a photography business can be a wonderful opportunity. It can also prove to be a challenge. However, unlike many businesses (i.e. - high tech), starting a photography business is not rocket science. It's been done successfully many times before. The trick to saving yourself a lot of pain as you setup the business is to learn from the experience of others. The following are some tips for starting a successful business.

Purchase the essentials. There are very few barriers to creating a photography business; however, there are a few things you must purchase to be taken seriously.
First you'll need a website. In the digital age a website is not optional. It will allow you to display your work, upload prints, and display your availability to your potential clients.

Second, you'll need a blog. Most photographers put a few shots up of every session on their blog. This provides several benefits. If the photographer has put his blog on his website, it will bring fresh content to his website, which in turn will help the web page's search engine rankings.

Third, a photographer needs to have Photoshop and Lightroom. These two programs are essential a photographers workflow.

Fourth, a photographer will need an online ordering system. Some template web pages come with online ordering software; however, often a separate program is necessary to have a high quality online proofing and ordering system.
In addition to having these items, a photographer should evaluate his hosting services carefully. Many services offer unlimited space and bandwidth. However, in the fine print it will be found that there are limits. They may limit the amount of CPU usage which is available. They may limit the number of files which can be stored on the network. So, the space is only unlimited if you have increasingly large numbers of files.
