Orange County Photographers: Why Brand a Photography Business?

Newport Beach, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach and Irvine are all competitive locations in which to run a photography business. One effective way to compete is to build a brand.

Coke is a well recognized world wide brand; as is McDonalds. These companies have literally spent billions of dollars to develop an effective brand. Why are these companies willing to spend vast sums of money - not on bettering their product but on simply establishing a message in the minds of the public of what their product is and what purpose it serves?

The big pictures answer is of course because it makes money. While most photography business owners are not seeking to establish world wide brand recognition that billions can easily identify, they will benefit from establishing a brand in which everyone in their city can recognize. If people in their city can as easily identify that particular business when thinking of wedding photographers as they recognize McDonalds when they are thinking fast food restaurant the number of people calling to book a session will increase dramatically.

There are a number of reasons to establish a brand. Some of the most valuable are:

1. A brand provides people with a sense of security when they purchase. Unfortunately people rightly are skeptical of a business of which they have never heard. There are too many scams out there. If you have an established brand in your community, people know you have been in business for a number of years. The risk of using you becomes less than using photographers they’ve never heard of.

2. If the business owner has established his brand correctly, the brand will carry with it the perception of quality. People will usually be willing to pay more when they perceive value. In addition they will find value in being able to provide a name that people recognize when asked who created those beautiful images. 

3. A brand makes you easier to remember. If your advertising does not have one consistent brand message, the message will be diluted among the messages sent out from the crowded photography industry. A brand establishes a clear message in the public's collective minds.
