Reviewing The GBC Velobind V110e Electric Four Pin Velobind Punch

The Velobind V110e is an updated version of the GBC Velobind V110 and is an electric punch designed for punching holes for use with Four pin reclosable Velobind strips. The V110e is an inexpensive binding system that offers a high end look. Plus the documents it produces are easily editable for addition or removal of pages.

Overview:
  • The Velobind V110e is an updated version of the GBC Velobind V110 and is an electric punch designed for punching holes for use with Four pin reclosable Velobind strips.
  • A lower cost alternative for companies who like the look of GBC Velobind but don't want to spend over $1000 on a hot knife binding system.
  • The V110e is an inexpensive binding system that offers a high end look. Plus the documents it produces are easily editable for addition or removal of pages.

Strengths / Features:

  • The V110e uses a simple to operate push button punching control to punch up to 24 sheets (actually more like 20) with a small four hole round pattern. For such an inexpensive electric machine this actually an impressive punching capacity.
  • It has a convenient jam release lever on the side of the machine that helps you deal with potential paper jams. However, in order to prevent paper jams from occurring it is best to remember that you should only punch 2 plastic covers at a time and that you shouldn't try to overload the machine.
  • The V110e includes a small reclosable Velobind bind and debind tool. This small gray plastic tool is used to help you push the pins down into the back of the receiving strip during the binding process and is also used to help you edit the bound documents if you need to release the pins later on.

Weaknesses / Limitations:

  • The V110e is just a punch. It does not include a finishing unit of any kind. This means that inserting the four pin strips through the holes and snapping them in place is a manual process. For small volumes of reports or proposals this is fine. However, for large volume users this would be incredibly tedious.
  • The V110e is not designed for high volume punching applications and if you attempt to punch large numbers of clear plastic covers or use this punch too much you might see the dies begin to dull. Unfortunately, the dies for this machine are not replaceable and you will have to replace the machine if this occurs. Purchasing pre-punched plastic or poly covers is recommended with the V110e. Luckily, the hole pattern for 11 pin Velobind is compatible with the four pin pattern used by the V110e so pre-punched items should be readily available.
  • There are a limited number of supplies available for the V110e binding system. Currently four pin strips are available in Black, Navy Blue and White. Burgundy strips used to be available but have been discontinued for quite some time. If these three colors don't fit your needs then the V110e won't be a good fit for you.
  • One of the greatest strengths of a traditional hot knife Velobind system is the security that it offers. However, by nature the reclosable strips used by the V110e don't

Recommendation:

  • If you like the look of Velobind and are looking for an economical solution then the V110e might be a good option for you. It is ideal for organizations that need to do low to medium amounts of binding . It is also ideal for organizations that are looking for a highly professional looking reclosable (editable) binding solution.
  • The V110e is a great machine for what it is and as long as you can live with its few limitations then it will most likely be a great machine for your needs.
