Overview:
Unibind offers a binding
solution for companies that don't want to have to punch and bind their
books and documents. It provides the look of a perfect bound book
without the need for any punching or inserting.
All you need
to do is insert your pages into your spine or cover and place the
document onto the machine. The machine does its job and you allow the
document to cool. There isn't really any simpler binding system
available.
The Unibind system offers a huge variety of
binding options to users who need to give their reports and documents a
different look and feel.
Strengths / Features:
The
Unibind XU138 provides users with a huge number of options for binding
their documents. It can be used for producing hard covered
presentations, photobooks, reports with clear or frosted front covers
and can even be used with customized front and back covers.
This
machine has a maxiumum capacity of 36mm. This means you can bind a
single document that is 36mm thick or multiple documents up to a total
maximum thickness of 36mm. This means that you can bind multiple small
documents and reports at one time.
The XU138 automatically
senses the steel spine in the Unibind covers or spines and activates
the heater when you place the spine or cover on the machine. It will
heat the document for the appropriate amount of time and then let you
know when your document is finished so that you can move it to the
cooling rack.
It can also be used along with thermal binding covers or glue strips by using a spare Unibind cover to activate the machine.
Weaknesses / Limitations:
The
36mm capacity (approximately 1-1/2") is large enough for most users.
However, organizations that need to bind a large number of documents
may want to choose a binding machine with multiple heating units so
that they can bind more documents at once. Unfortunately, users who
need to bind a single document that is larger than 36mm thick will need
to consider a different binding style.
The supplies for the
UniBind binding system utilize a steel binding spine that is extremely
strong and provides an excellent quality bind for your documents.
However, the fact that the spine is steel means that the documents will
not open flat or wrap around. These are features that are commonly
available with punch and bind binding systems.
Unibind covers
can easily be customized with foil stamping. However offset printing of
hard covers and spine printing are difficult to obtain since the
supplies are manufactured in Europe (there is a 10-12 week leadtime).
Construction:
The
Unibind XU138 is a combination of plastic and metal construction.
However it is very durable and should be adequate for most
organizations use.
The heating unit for this machine is
activated by a magnet that detects the metal in the spine and activates
the unit. This magnet can be tricked by using a washer (not recommended
for safety reasons) or a spare unibind cover. This will allow you to
use your Unibind system with thermal binding covers or glue strips.
The
machine comes with a 1 year warranty and generally has very few
problems. However, if ever the heating unit does have a problem (this
is the only mechanical part in this machine) it will need to be
repaired by Unibind.
Recommendation:
Adequate
for most users volume needs. It is a great choice for high end
presentations and proposals. This makes it very popular for real estate
agents, appraisers and printers.
For high volume users, a
multi heater unit might be a good choice. However, no functionality
will be added just more capacity. Great option for binding documents,
reports, presentations, proposals, photo books, yearbooks and more.
