Strip Clubs Are A Cultural Exercise

While the basic concept behind nude or partially-nude entertainment remains the same, there are many differences within the industry that exist from one country to the next. Over the years these establishments have developed niches in various parts of the world that are unique to that area and remain so today.

Strip clubs are one of the main facets of the global industry that is adult entertainment. Because of this, they exist in various forms in countries around the world.

The global industry centered around strip clubs account for upwards of $75 billion per year in revenue, yet while it is spread across the globe it remains focused around certain areas. North America, Europe and Asia have all established a renowned popular culture that dictates the style of their strip clubs, each of which is unique and contributes to the appeal of the establishments in these areas.

European style cabaret shows that featured singing, dancing and other performances by scantily clad performers first became popular in the late 19th century. This typically involved plays or musicals in which the performers moved about suggestively or in a sexual nature, or instead disrobed until becoming almost completely naked.

Local laws in countries such as France and England originally prohibited these dancers from being partially or completely nude while moving. This prompted actresses and show directors to find a way around this regulation by having naked women stand completely still on stage, often at the beginning or end of a performance.

What is known as the American-style strip club, which features topless or fully nude dancers performing suggestive dances, actually became popular due to American laws banning stripteases prior to World War II. This prompted the establishment of many underground, ‘speakeasy’ ventures of this type that popularized this form of adult entertainment. Following the war, American style entertainment spread to Europe and around the world. Today these are the most common forms of strip clubs.

This same approach to erotic entertainment also become popular in Asia following World War II, most notably in Japan and Thailand. While establishments in these countries also began as European-style burlesques and eventually progressed to nude dancing, they were the first of their kind to take things a step further and eventually integrate live sex shows on stage.

Both Japan’s capital, Tokyo, as well as another of its largest cities, Osaka, now feature prominent red-light districts that feature adult establishments. Services offered in these areas can range from stripteases to private peep shows and even prostitution.

Adult-themed establishments around the globe continue to take on a number of different forms, but in an era where sex has become more accepted and pervasive it is far less suppressed than ever before. Strip clubs in cities and countries of all shapes and sizes continue to push the limits of local laws and ordinances in an attempt to remain on the cutting edge of customer satisfaction in one of the most competitive industries in existence today.
