She wondered aloud if there was an easier way to make women feel comfortable, and questioned the concept of a women only gym. Gary decided that her idea might be what the couple needed to make their gym a success.

The first Curves franchise as we know it today opened in 1995. The basic concept of the Curves franchise has remained the same since the opening of that first new gym. The concept was that the Curves franchise would be for women only, no men allowed. At all times of the day when women were present, there would be no men allowed inside. The couple believed that this would allow women to feel more comfortable because it gave them a safe place to go for their exercise needs.

The other idea behind the Curves franchise was that it would focus on using thirty minutes of training every day. According to experts, people who walk for thirty minutes each day can lead a healthier life, lose weight, and increase their general well being. Curves franchises played into this idea by using thirty minutes of circuit training during each session. Members can choose to do these sessions once a day for as often as they would like.

The Curves franchise has grown into a worldwide phenomenon. The first Curves franchise was sold in 1997, with additional stores sold every year since. During 2002 the company moved into International territories starting in Canada. Since 2005 the Curves International company has only opened two franchise stores of their own, with all other stores opened by owner operators. Curves has now grown beyond a simple exercise gym into an all encompassing franchise. A cookbook and exercise book released by the company were both best sellers. The company has also branched out into the food industry as well with a line of healthy products. Those products include breakfast cereals, snack bars, and other foods.

The Curves franchise is one of the biggest franchises in the world today. The company itself is worth nearly $3 billion, with franchise owners taking home a large portion of that money. There are a number of operators who experienced enough success that they later went on to purchase additional stores from the company. There are nearly twice as many success stories from owners than there are any failures, and the company prides themselves on this fact.
