The UniMate WireMate and Fellowes Quasar 130 Wire Binding Machines: A Comparison

A while back, we tested both of these machines to see how they were similar and different, and if one has the advantage over the other one. Here's a look at them....

The WireMate

• This is a pretty basic binding machine that's nice and easy to use. However, it still has a good punching capacity: it can punch up to 15 sheets at once. (The punching mechanism is vertical.) Your documents can contain up to 120 pages.

• The WireMate is compatible with 3:1 pitch wire spines that are up to 9/16" thick. The spines need to be 12 inches long. This enables you to bind letter-sized documents. There is a spine selector guide on the device for quick reference.

• The settings of this machine's wire closer can be adjusted for a more secure binding. This will prevent you from needing to re-assemble your documents and bind them again. There's also a wire holder so it's easy to put your book together.

• Thanks to its approximate dimensions of 16" (length) x 13" (width) x 5" (height), the WireMate is good for smaller work areas. However, the machine's handle is on the right-hand side. A D-shaped handle would have been a better choice.

The Quasar 130

• The Quasar 130 has a vertical punching mechanism like the WireMate as well as the same 15-page punching capacity. However, the Quasar 130's binding capacity is slightly higher: it was bind 130 pages instead of 120.

• Like the WireMate, this device has a wire spine selector you can use if you need helping choosing your supplies. It works with 3:1 pitch spines.

• This machine is slightly larger than the WireMate but it's still pretty compact. It measures about 18" x 15" x 5". The device can be folded up when you're not using it. This will help you save space. Also, the handle is D-shaped which is really user-friendly.

• This product has a two-year warranty. It also has the Fellowes name which will definitely appeal to some people. It also comes with some supplies to help you get started. (The WireMate doesn't.)

The UniMate WireMate and Fellowes Quasar 130 are actually pretty similar. Their punching capacities match up, they use the same supplies, and they're both on the small side. However, the Quasar 130 has the advantage due to its D-shaped handle and its great warranty. Also, the Fellowes name is much more familiar than UniMate, so that may be important to you. We really liked both of these devices, so you'll need to device which one is right for you. They're both great, so either way, you're going to end up with a terrific wire binding machine.
