The advertisement you place in the yellow pages must be attractive and it must have the ability to attract people to it. It must be as attention getting as it can possibly be. If it doesn't draw the eye to it, then you have wasted your hard-earned marketing dollars. This is your number one goal when it comes to the advertisement you design.

You may think that this is a very obvious point, but if you take a look through the yellow pages at the multitude of ads you will see that many of them fail to grab the attention of the audience. Be aware though, that your ad design does not have to be the largest in order to stand out as one of the shining stars. It needs only to be an attention getter, and bigger is not necessarily better.

It is important that you figure out what your would-be customers are looking for and what is most important to them. Once you can figure that out, then you will have an edge over your competition. What is your unique message and how will you solve the problem in a more efficient manner than any of your competitors? This is what is thought of as being the Unique Selling Proposition (USP).

When preparing an ad to submit to the yellow pages it is essential that you bear in mind that consumers most often base their decisions upon emotional factors. You therefore need to have a message that is inspiring and speaks to the heart as opposed to one that speaks directly and only to the head. If you can reach people through their emotions and tap into what matters most to them, then you will be well on your way to getting ahead of your competition.

The method you use matters as much as the message. You must be clear and concise and use brevity to tell the story that you wish to tell to your audience. Stay away from mundane generic words and phrases that are predictable and downright dull. You do not want to bore those reading your advertisement and you do not want to waste the space you have to promote your business.

Get rid of any photos, text or graphics that are boring and instead go for attention grabbing bold titles and words that get your point across right away. You should also aim for images that make sense to the reader immediately. When you do these things you help to reinforce the USP you have chosen and you liven up your ad space right away!
