What are included in Background Checks?

Background checks are conducted for the purpose of knowing important information that can help in the evaluation of a person. Every step is crucial and should be done with careful discretion. Anything that deviates with that purpose may be considered invasion of privacy and can be subjected to law suits. 

Performing person background check can be very broad. They can range from a detailed personal history of a person down to the slightest information you won’t even think as important but it is. Others even include social networking sites such as Facebook and MySpace just to gain information about one person.  The process is particularly applicable during job application wherein the company requires employment screening. In a survey, about 44% employers used these sites for additional info about their applicants.

For an applicant, it is important to get ready for this process. Remember that background checks are mostly done at times when you least expect it. Here are some of the things that might be included:

  • Vehicle registration, license, and or records about driving such as previous offense or involvement in vehicular accidents.
  • Credit records, banks accounts, and other financial records such as assets and liabilities, property ownerships that contains your name. This may include bankruptcy too.
  • Criminal records that includes previous offense, trials, records at the court, conviction, imprisonment, sex offenders, etc.
  • Social security number
  • Information about your education which will definitely include good and bad records.
  • Interviews to your neighbors will be conducted. Relatives and friends will be asked too for character reference.
  • Information about health and other medical records such as drug testing.
  • Records in the military.
  • State licensing records.
  • Past employers, worker’s compensation, and employment history. This will include past disputes or maybe a most outstanding employee award.

The information included is really extensive but it would still depend on the nature of the job and how much the employer wants to know about you. The above list is the most important ones. There are jobs that are required by the state or by federal law to conduct background checks. Those that involve children like in schools, youth camps, or sports and those that involves elderly especially disabled and sick ones such as in hospices.

Moreover, employers do not only seek information from background checks but also in job applications, interviews, and written questionnaires too. In such cases, there are very personal questions and some of them have led to lawsuits.
