When You Think of Plastic Films, Think of Mylar

Mylar film is polyester plastic sheet. This is trade name for some of plastic sheet product. Some of boPET products are named as Mylar. These were developed in 1950 and first time this was used by NASA in their satellite. This trade mark is owned by company named DuPont Tejjin.


Various types of sheets available in market: -

Types of Mylar sheets are Plain, Anti – Static, Adhesion treated, Metalized, Barrier coated. There are various types of finishes are also available in market. Its thickness varies from 12 um to 350 um.

Applications: -

Packing: - Over this film we can add a metal layer, which make it more reflective. It can even reflect infrared rays and can be used for food packing. It even improves its seal ability. It is also used in solar cooker. Mylar is Very good reflective material. So it is used in reflective lights. It can be used in farming to protect plants from sun rays so that plants don’t get damaged and can be protected from sun light. Mylar film can reflect up to 92 % of sun light. It is also used in window glasses for preventing it from scratches.

Electronic: - Electronic items like liquid crystal display, CRT monitors, Plasma TV’s are made using Mylar film. Over glass, coating of Mylar film is done to make it anti reflecting and anti glare. It is used in data recording devices like Floppy disks; Audio CD’s, Hard disks etc. Loudspeakers, microphones and diaphragm material are made using this. As it is very adhering, so it is used in printing technology. That preserves the prints for long time. This include inkjet printing, laser printing, screen printing, digital printing etc. It is used for taking blue prints of any legal document.

Medical: - This film is used in medical for x – ray and in packing. Test strips are also made using Mylar film.

Industrial: - As Mylar film can resist up to 178.83 degree Celsius, so it is used in industrial application. It is economical too for industry purposes. It is used for insulation purposes as it is insulated to electricity in all environments.

Marines: -It is used in marine applications for high performance. It is used for building sails.

Other: - For making artificial nails, woman’s in salons use Mylar material. This stays for longtime then any gel. It is also used in other daily life purposes too like in kite making; glass shatteringHealth Fitness Articles, making bags etc.
