Arizona State University was founded in 1885 as the Tempe Normal School when John Samuel Armstrong had a bill introduced and passed through the House. During its early years, the school enrolled only high school students. Currently, the over sixty eight thousand ASU students attend classes on campuses located in Mesa, downtown Phoenix, NW Phoenix and Tempe. The original campus is located in Tempe and more than half of the student body attends courses there.

Four campuses comprise the ASU system, one in Tempe-the largest and original campus; NW Phoenix, downtown Phoenix and Mesa. Students may take classes online from anywhere in the world and enrollment in these internet learning opportunities has been steadily increasing.

Arizona State University offers a wide range of study disciplines, allowing students to obtain degrees in all levels of education. Once believed to be predominantly a teaching college, ASU now offers degrees in a wide range of focuses and continues to expand their programs on an annual basis.
