There is no reason now for people to be so isolated. You can live pretty much anywhere in the world and be able to use satellites for communicating by different methods. By computer or sat phone or even some other internet ready device, there are many ways to stay connected.

The computer has raised the general public awareness to the many different ways to communicate effectively. There is e-mail, IM's and even including video conferencing. This is a lot of fun and some companies offer it for free. The next best thing to being there is to video visit with the grand kids. Another handy and inexpensive computer tool is VOIP. This is simply a way to make a phone call using an internet connection.

It is easy to take for granted internet access using a terrestrial phone line as most people have gotten used to the convenience and the different sources available. This used to be next to impossible for the fringe dwellers, theirs was a whole different set of issues. Nowadays, satellite broadband has made many of these issues go away and can be set up most anywhere in the world. Some places will encounter unusual service conditions, but by and large internet service is available most of the time.

The same is true of sat phones. If you meet a few requirements you can use a sat phone in most any place. There are only a few spots on the planet that are unable to get full and regular satellite service and they are not places that are normally inhabited by humans. For the computer or the phone to use a satellite service there needs to be clear skies and no blockage between the antenna or dish from mountains, tree's, or buildings.

In countries like Australia, it is becoming easier to get help to afford antennas, phones and dishes that will allow its citizens to use the satellite technology. They have a variety of subsidizing programs that make phones and satellite technology affordable and a reality to its outback population. Enjoying the capabilities of world wide communication and modern functions have raised the standard of living in its remote locations and made scientific research much more feasible.
