However, when it comes to resetting the password of the router, users often face issues as the password reset method can seem quite complex. Steps To Reset Password Of A Cisco Router

  • First, you’ll need to plug one end of the DB9 cord/cable to the serial port and the other end to the Console port at the back of the Cisco router device
  • Now you’ll need to establish a serial connection for which the settings are as follows: 
  • Baud set to 9600
  • Data bits set to 8
  • Parity set to No
  • Stop bits set to 1
  • Flow Control set to None
  • You’ll need to use putty for this connection
  • Now, simply reboot your Cisco router and then press the Break key to break the boot process
  • Next, type config 0x2142 in your computer to bypass NVRAM while the bootup process is going on. Don’t worry; your existing configuration will not be deleted.
  • Now, enter Reset to reboot your Cisco router and select No from the run setup
  • Next, type Copy Start-Run to load the startup configuration into the memory and you should be seeing your name in the prompt window
  • Now, type “enable secret new_password” to change the enable secret and then change the register to 0x2102 by typing: config-register 0x2102
  • Next, your Cisco router should be rebooted with loading the old configuration along with the new password
  • At lastPsychology Articles, simply save the password so that the device will be persistent during reboots and then type copy run start.
