A sibling may be the keeper of one's identity, the only person with the keys to one's unfettered, more fundamental self. ~Marian Sandmaier

Rakhi or Raksha Bandhan is the festival of glory and boundless joy that celebrates the undying bond of love a brother shares with his sister and vice versa. The sacred amulet, Rakhi, is contemplated to possess an ethereal power of protecting brothers from every threats in life. In today's jet age, handmade Rakhi threads are evanescent and are being replaced by colorful strands elaborately designed. Retrospecting the past tradition of tying a handmade Rakhi, this article discusses how to make Rakhi threads at home as well as some of the Rakhi trends 2012.

As the physical symbol of sisterly affection, Rakhi thread carries out those inestimable sentiments and emotions which makes our world the best place to live. Add a more personal touch to this sacred thread by making a handmade Rakhi for your dearest brother. Homemade Rakhi handicrafts are always special to the brothers as they bring out the personal touch. Take a little time out of your busy schedule and try these little steps to create a wonder for your loving brother. A self-made Rakhi is thousand time better than even an exquisite gold or diamond Rakhi. So, let's take a look at the materials that you will require to make a beautiful handmade Rakhi for Rakhi 2012.

  • 1 Silk Thread Reel of your choice (preferably red or green or multi-colored)
  • 1 Cotton Thread Reel which should match the silk reel color
  • 1 Toothbrush
  • Small Artificial Pearls
  • Beads, sequins
  • A pair of scissors
  • Glue

Take a bunch of silk threads from the reel and cut each one around 25-30 inches long. Hold all the silk threads in a fashion that their both ends meet each other. Fold the entire length of the bunch to half. Now, use the cotton thread to tie a knot at the one fourth length of the folded thread. Equally divide the longer portion of the silk thread in two halves. Plait both the separated portions individually and tie the ends with small cotton threads to make a good margin. Now, the longer portion will make the string of the Rakhi which will be used for tying the thread. The folded portion of the Rakhi is not touched yet. Now, cut the loops at the center of this folded part using a scissors. Now, you are going to make the center of the Rakhi. Comb this center using a toothbrush in a way that it will create a fluff of silk threads. Brush the strings also to get a more soft feeling. And finally you have your first beautiful creation for your brother. No, no. You are not done yet. Till now you have only made a simple Rakhi thread. Now, you need to furbish it with the beads, sequins and pearls. Use your creativity and make some unique designs by sticking the beads using the glue. Give it some time to glued.
