Jewish Blessing- The Remarkable Sayings

A Jewish blessing is an ornament that is both decorative and meant to protect you and your loved ones and keep you from harm and the evil eye

According to Genesis 12:2 and 3, God had promised to bestow his blessings to Abraham, his fellow people and to the entire world. The Jews speak that Almighty God has literally blessed the Jews since the historical ages. This blessing is been carried forward and shared as time passed by. Jewish blessing is said to have made the Jews ‘great’ and has concurrently helped the rest of the people to share the favors. Some of the blessings are:-

Daily Jewish Blessing for Food

The Jews define “meal” as any type of edible made from barley, rye, spelt, wheat or oats. Rituals involved here are-

1.      N'tilat Yadayimthat is Handwashing before eating

2.       Jewish blessing “motzi” before eating

3.       Recitation of The Blessing of Sustenance known as Birkat HaMazon afterwards

The Jews define “snack” as any edible except bread and the occasion involves-

1.       No handwashing

2.       No motzi

3.       Recitation of Birkat HaMazon afterwards

In the Judaic customs, there are different types of Jewish blessings for different food types.  There are basically 5 distinct terms used for denoting the food classes and each of them has unique code of blessings.

·         Mezzonot Jewish blessing- “Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam,
bo-rei mi-nei m'zo-not.”

·         Hagafen- “Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam,
bo-rei p'ri ha-ga-fen.”

·         Ha-eitz- “Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam,
bo-rei p'ri ha-eitz.”

·         Ha-adamah- “Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam,
bo-rei p'ri ha-a-da-mah.”

·         Shehakol- “Ba-ruch a-tah A-do-nai E-lo-hei-nu Me-lech Ha-o-lam,
she-ha-kol ni-h'yeh bid-va-ro.”

Jewish Blessing for Normal Practices

·         After waking up- “I give thanks before You, Living and Eternal King, that You have returned within me my soul with compassion; how abundant is Your faithfulness!”

·         When putting tallit katan- “Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and commanded us regarding the commandment of fringes.”

Jewish Blessing for Danger and Illness Survival

The Birkhat Ha-Gomel is a Jewish Blessing chanted after childbirth, illness and during danger. It says, “Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu melekh haolam, hagomel lahayavim tovot sheg'malani kol tov.” It can be translated as, “Blessed are You, Lord, our God, King of the Universe, Who bestows good things on the unworthy and has bestowed on me every goodness.”
