Jewish Mezuzah- A Sign of Protection

A Jewish Mezuzah is a decorative item bearing inscriptions of Hebrew verses, placed at the doorframe. It is basically a sacred parchment (klaf) containing hand-written inscriptions of the Torah. This parchment is stored in a beautifully decorated protective tubular case. The parchment is made from a specific kind of animal species called ‘kosher’.

The Jewish Mezuzah originated during the Biblical ages. The Jewish Mezuzah serves as a sacred symbol for a Jewish home and speaks for the commandments that God had implied for the Jewish families. It also signifies that God is with you for all time and by placing a Mezuzah at the doorpost you are into good deeds. In fact the term ‘Mezuzah’ means ‘doorposts’.

Theperson who writes the Biblical texts in the Jewish Mezuzah parchment is known as a ‘scrife’. They are professionally trained people as they are to write the scripts exactly the way they are written in the Torah. Even a little mistake can make the parchment invalid. Before hanging the Jewish Mezuzah a special Jewish blessing is to be recited.

“Barukh ata Adonai Eloheinu Melekh ha-olam, asher kidshanu b'mitzvotav v'tzivanu likbo-a mezuzah.”

This script can be translated as, “Blessed are You, Adonai our God, Ruler of the universe, Who sanctifies us with holy commandments and commands us to fix a mezuzah.” This blessing is recited only once and no words are supposed to be spoken until all the Mezuzahs are hung all around the house. The Jewish Mezuzah is not hung near the bathroom.

The Jewish Mezuzah encloses two portions of the Torah. Each of the portions has certain verses which are uniquely significant for the Observant-Jewish families. The sections are-

1.       Deuteronomy 6:4- 9- This portion is called ‘Shema’. This portion starts with, “Hear O Israel, the Lord is our God, the Lord is One.” It tells us to keep God near to our lives by keeping his saying scripted at the entrance of our abode.

2.       Deuteronomy 11:13- 21- This portion is called ‘Vehaya’. It tells us that if we value and fulfil God’s commandments He shall compensate our lives.

The parchment is always rolled upwards. The Jewish Mezuzah can be made of wood, marble or metal. Talmud states that abiding by the Mezuzah commandments protects the members of the particular house and brings long life to them.
