Jewish protection amulets and their significance

Protection amulets are small pieces of jewelleries used to ward of evil spirit and protect the owner from any kind of trouble. Jewish religion is very rich in traditions and this gets reflected in their amulet designs.

A variety of protection amulets are worn by the Jewish people. Pendants containing the “Chai” symbol, the six pointed stars of David, Menorahs etc are some of the more common amulets worn by the people of Judaism. The Hebrew name for Jewish amulets is “Kemeot”. They usually contain “God’s” verses and spoken words embedded on them. Hamsa hand protection amulets are the most common amulets used to ward off the “evil eye”. This is depicted by an inscription of an eye centred on a raise hand. This symbol signifies the warding off of evil spirit by the eyes of the almighty.  The “shivti” with the Hebrew term for God centered at the top as lions on either side.  The verse “I have set the Lord always before me.” remains inscribed in it. These protection amulets are used in the places of worship and also at the front of the house.

The combination of the earthly and heavenly laws, the Kabbalah, is a common subject of depiction in the protection amulets. These Kabbalah amulets stress on the words taken directly from the holy book of Torah. The words must be inscribed in the same manner as is written in the book. The amulets are made up of parchment, silver and sometimes gem stones are also used.

Gem stones have for long played an important part in the making of the Jewish amulets. “Odem” or Rubino is used for fertility in women and protect them during child birth. Another stone called “Nofech” gets its name from the fact that it is believed that people wearing this stone will defend him from his enemies. The colour red is of great importance in Jewish religion. Most of the protection amulets remain tied to the hand or neck with red coloured wool or thread. Red is believed to be the colour that god used to fight off demons.

These protection amulets are the most preferred gift given during the holy occasions of Judaism like Kabbalah and Shabbat.
