You must have heard about the ritual of Mezuzah. Well this ritual item finds its basis in the verse of Deut 6:4-9 which states the writing of these words on the gates and doorpost of your house.  As per tradition, a scroll containing these verses should be placed on the doorpost of business establishments as well as homes owned by Jewish people. Often the mezuzah cover is mistaken to be the actual Mezuzah.  It is the scroll that is known as Mezuzah. The scroll is rolled and placed inside a cover. A wooden mezuzah is what is used on most occasions.

You may even create a wooden mezuzah of your own.  You need to purchase a block of wood. It should be at least of 7-by-2-by-2 inches. This is the minimum space that you would need to fit in the scroll.

You need to drill a small hole measuring about six inches in the block of wood. Remember to wrap up the scroll in a plastic sheet so that it does not get damaged due to wet conditions or mildew.  The hole should be thick enough so that it can contain the scroll and hold it properly.  There are certain scrolls which are larger than the usual size and therefore you have to take their size into account before buying the wood.

You can file the wood to smoothen up the surface, carve it up and decorate it according to your own preference.  You can decorate the case with Hebrew letters like ‘Yod’Article Search, ‘Shin’ and ‘Dalet’.  These letters refer to God and are considered to be traditionally unpronounceable names.  These names are believed to be auspicious for your home and business and thus guard your home against possible danger. Wrap the scroll in a plastic and use a glue stick to seal it. It is customary to keep on checking the Mezuzah a couple of times every seven years and therefore it would not be a good idea to seal the mouth of the wooden mezuzah completely.  You can either nail the mezuzah with the help of a nail on your doorpost or also attach it with glue or tape.
