If you’re already starting to feel the chill in the autumn air,The Knit Parade: Autumn/Winter Trends in Women’s Knitwear Articles don’t despair at the loss of summer. Instead approach it as a reason to celebrate (and shop – as if you needed one...), for this autumn/winter there’s a wealth of exciting trends in knitwear for women to keep you snug and stylish through to winter and beyond.

The humble jumper is back on the fashion agenda this season, thanks to the likes of Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton, who paired too-cute cropped styles with 1950s full-flare skirts and dresses for an oh-so-now reworking of a retro approach to women’s knitwear. For the perfect take on the trend, look for boxy shapes that sit on the waist and three-quarter length sleeves.

Elsewhere on the catwalks, the key themes in knitwear for women were texture and pattern. Chunky knits are, of course, a welcome cold-weather staple, and other takes on texture include waffle and shaggy knits. When it comes to pattern, the options are endless, but for true winter style we recommend channelling your inner ski bunny like the girls at D&G in alpine-inspired intarsias. Alternatively, look for decoration on your knitwear – brocade and button detailing mimics the dramatic baroque look of the Balmain runway.

For the more adventurous amongst you, this season’s essential outerwear investment – the cape – will surely be on the fashion hit list, and knitted versions of the statement shape make for a softer, more wearable take on the trend. Enveloping blanket-style capes make for the cosiest options, whilst keeping you effortlessly cool at the same time.

Finally, there were some surprising developments in women’s knitwear at the autumn/winter shows. Alongside the usual offering of cardigans, jumpers and dresses, ‘unexpected knits’ were to be found, including leggings, maxi skirts and even crop tops. Left-field takes on knitwear perhaps, but a trend that sure to prove a knit hit in the months to come.
