Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common disorders that children face. This disorder may continue to adolescent or even to adulthood.

Parents and teachers can miss the fact that children with signs of inattentiveness have the disorder because they are often calm and less likely to act out. They may sit calmly, seeming to work, but they are often not paying attention to what they are doing. They may get along well with other children, compared with those with the other subtypes, who tend to have social problems. But children with the inattentive kind of ADHD are not the only ones whose disorders can be missed. For example, adults may think that children with the hyperactive and impulsive subtypes just have expressive or punitive problems.

Though researchers are not sure about the causes of ADHD, but in most of the cases it has been observed that genes play a vital role. It depends upon a combination of different factors like brain injuries, nutrition and the social environment might contribute to ADHD. Children with ADHD who carry a particular version of a certain gene have thinner brain tissue in the areas of the brain associated with attention. Children who have gone through a brain injury may showcase some symptoms similar to ADHD. However, a very small number of children with ADHD have suffered from traumatic brain injury. Studies also show that when mothers are more exposed to cigarette and alcoholic substances during their pregnancy, the chances of these children suffering from ADHD becomes higher.

In addition, those preschoolers who are more exposed to lead, which can sometimes be found in plumbing fixtures or paint in old buildings, develop chances of suffering from ADHD symptoms. Artificial colors or preservatives in packaged foods are also found to be the causes of ADHD. No single test can diagnose a child as having ADHD. Parents however first notice that their child suddenly looses interest or get angry on small things. Often, teachers notice the symptoms first, when a child has trouble following rules, or frequently "spaces out" in the classroom or on the playground.

ADHD symptoms grow mostly during the childhood. Classroom environment can often be a challenge for children suffering from ADHD. The very tasks these children find the most difficult—sitting still, listening quietly, and concentrating—are the ones they are required to do all day long. Perhaps most frustrating of all is that most these children want to be able to learn and behave like their unaffected peers. However, parents can help their children to meet these challenges in schools. Parents teach them the strategies by which they can cope up with other kids of their class and can also sit quietly during the classes. Mental support is the basic thing that children require to fight with this mental syndrome. In this matter, teachers do play a vital role. Paying little bit more attention to ADHD child can help them come up from that particular stage and live their lives like other normal children. If this ADHD is diagnosed in an early stage, it can be cured also to a great extent.
