Talking to an average Indian citizen, it would be very much clear that Indian education is having a high esteem among people. Although India has a long and glorious history in field of studies, much of the system has been derived from the time of the British rule, before independence. Importance to education has always been given by rulers in different regions of India. Many of them were open and vehement proponents of education system in their kingdom. But, the manner in which the performances of kids would be judged is usually based on the annual examination, which people need to appear in annual examinations, passing which will let them sneak into the next higher standard.

Hardship Education

Getting into colleges is difficult, with lots of reservations and capitation fee and limited seats with higher cut offs. Starting from the college level education, children are selected into colleges on mark basis. Some students have to drop out, much because they do not have finances. Private universities are a distant dream for people, from not-so-well-off families. But, those who are able to gather higher education qualifications, do surely go on to become proficient in their field, with many of them having established themselves in high positions in the boards of multinational companies.

Fame existent

Many universities and colleges in India, providing higher education, especially in the fields of science & technology and management have become well known throughout the world. A testimony of such fame is found with the admissions of many foreign students in these national level institutes. Indian Institutes of Technology, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Indian Institute of Science in Hyderabad, Indian Institutes of Management and a few others have had a remarkable effect on Indian academics and research in the last few decades or so.

Statistical testimonies

By the year 2009, India was home to about 29 central universities, 100 deemed universities, 215 state universities and 33 institutes of national importance. Apart from these, there are also 16000 colleges in the country, catering to the millions of students aiming for higher education. Distance learning universities are also there, which provide a source of degree courses for interested students, who are not able to travel to distance places for completing their education. India is rated as the 3rd largest education system in the world, after China and United States. But, in the future, it has the potential to grow as the biggest educational hub in the world.

Hope for the future

Even though there is a lot of potential for the growth of education system in the country, streamlining and regulation of the system is highly essential. It is because of the lack of sufficient strictness in the implementation and monitoring of the system that quality in the education system in the country is missing. Although, AICTE, UGC, like bodies are present in the country for looking out for proper implementation of the system, yet there is a need to policy and decision making and enforcement of these laws by the policymakers of the country. About 15 bills, related to education systemScience Articles, pending in the parliament for the last couple of years is indicative of the distress level of the education system which needs to be checked.
