How a Math Tutor Could Help Your Child SucceedThere is no lack of work for the good math tutor. More than any
other subject, mathematics and sciences that are dependent
on it frustrate American students. If your high school student is suffering from a serious case of the “I don’t get its”, a math tutor could be just what he or she needs to move forward and succeed in the courses. Sometimes, it just takes one special person to show a student a different way of looking at their problems before the key to their mathematical intelligence unlocks the door. Once a student sees this new way of looking at the problems, they may never need serious assistance again. If you think that some people are simply born without the intelligence necessary to do difficult math, you should probably revise your thinking. While it is certainly true that some people will simply never “get” algebra or geometry, this is not the case for the vast majority of failing students or even the vast majority of adults who throw up their hands any time a math problem comes their way. If you are smart enough to do well in other school courses, chances are you have the ability to do well in mathematics. The problem, however, is this: many smart students are wholly unaccustomed to having to work hard for their grades. They do their homework at the last minute, they make educated guesses on tests, and they rely on general knowledge to help them with their school subjects. This kind of laissez faire attitude may work—to an extent—with history, social studies, and English , but it won’t work
with science and math. A math tutor may not be needed to explain the
work to a student so much as rather to act as an impetus for the student
to work harder and study longer. Some students give up on their science and math learning early on. This is especially true for those who have been frustrated with the subject and don’t think they will go into a field that requires it. But it is important to remember that understanding the building blocks to science and math carries over to understanding the entire world. A math tutor can advance that vital understanding.
