Ptlls - What Does Teaching In The Lifelong Learning Sector Imply?

With technology progressing at unbelievably fast rates, the information and knowledge gained from school, college and university is not always enough. Constant refreshers and reminders about the latest developments in the job sector are absolutely necessary so that businesses can keep up with the pace of discoveries, research and development.

PTLLS stands for "Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector". Teaching in the lifelong learning sector is very, very different from teaching at the primary, secondary or even at the university level. In this sector, teachers are dealing with seasoned and practiced professionals, who have a sound knowledge base, but are no longer used to classrooms and coaching.

The PTLLS certificate made its appearance in 2007, and is soon to be a prerequisite for anyone working as a trainer in Government-funded institutions. Obtaining this certificate is not difficult; the basic skills required are:

Expertise in the line the candidate wants to teach, up to the level he/she wants to be teaching

Comprehension of written assignments

Ability to speak and write in intelligible form

Desirable, of course, is the ability to communicate effectively and to motivate people. After taking the PTLLS training courses, it is expected that the candidates will be able to

Comprehend their roles, including its responsibilities and limits

Get a grip on the traditional and recent developments in the teaching of their specific subject

Create efficient session and class plans

Deliver motivational lectures and communicate effectively with their students

Master the methods of assessment and progress charting

The PTLLS courses do not work as a substitute for a PGCE or Masters in Education, as those qualifications are intended for teachers at the school education level. Instead, these courses are designed for teachers intending to work - or already working on an unregulated basis - in the post-compulsory sector as trainers, workshop organisers or motivators.

One of the key things to understand about post-compulsory teaching is that your students are adults. They are not being forced into the education system the way children are, and the qualification is not a complete necessity for them. It has been chosen of their own free will, and they expect to get results from it. This puts an added pressure on the teacher to deliver, so do realise that there will be a lot of homework to be done before conducting a post-compulsory teaching course. However, the PTLLS teaching course gives post-compulsory teachers a thorough grounding in how to plan lessons, interact with the adults and generally keep students both pleased and involved.

I must note here, that taking a PTLLS course is an example of "lifelong learning" in itself. During the course itself, note what you as a student wish your teacher had done better, as well as the aspects of his/her teaching that you would like to emulate.
